SALT LAKE CITY — More types of fireworks may become available in Utah according to a bill the Senate approved Friday.
HB22 would permit "cake" fireworks that remain on the ground but shoot colorful sparks higher than the 15 feet allowed in current law. Fireworks that leave the ground, such as bottle rockets, would still be prohibited as would roman candles, firecrackers and cherry bombs.
The bill also changes the summer period for when fireworks may be legally used to June 26 through July 26.
Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, voted against the measure. "I think it just widens the gate to more accidents," he said.
The House approved the bill last week.
